As some of you know, I usually travel between Belém and Portel on boats run by Bom Jesus (yes – Good Jesus – what else would he be?) Navigation Services. Some pictures documenting my most recent trip:

The boat I took holds about 550 passengers. It’s very safe, as you can see. The scariest part is the lack of soap.

Most passengers sleep in a “rede” (pronounced HEH-jee)

  1. So, the picture of the dying Bom Jesus is far closer to what I imagined you traveling down the Amazon on. Your actual boat looks quite luxurious!

  2. Oh, my word! I admire your strength. The people on the boat would throw me over board because of all the complaining and tears.

    • I think it’s more to do with hard-headedness than strength! Don’t worry – they wouldn’t understand your complaining and the tears would just mingle with the sweat.
